This past May Jews everywhere helped Israel celebrate its 60th year of independence and Hillel students were no exception.  Across the globe Hillels brought young people together at a variety of different events including parties, festivals, tzedek projects and more.

Hillels in Latin America welcomed the world to their South American flavored celebrations.   Events held in Cordoba City and Buenos Aires, Argentina; Montevideo, Uruguay; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil were simultaneously webcast for the whole world to see.

For Hillel Rio participant Teo Helou, the highlight of the night was listening to a saxophonist Michael Niremberg play Israel's anthem, Hatikva.

“We could see the emotion and excitement in everyone’s eyes," he said. "The happiness for this day in Israel was definitely present at our celebration.  It was a night I will never forget."

In Moscow, Hillel Russia took part in organizing a community event, “Journey to Israel.” Thousands gathered in Ostankino Park on May 18 to celebrate with the music of famous Israeli and Russian singers and to enjoy Israeli food together.

In Israel, Hillel Haifa participated in a project in the Hadar neighborhood, celebrating Israel’s 60th year with the community.  Leadership students ran a creative program called “My Flag,” where each participant created his or her own Israeli flag, sharing a little piece of what Israel means to them.
