
Beatrice S. Mandel, Chair Elect
First Person from West Coast to Head Board
The Board of Directors of Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life (FJCL) has elected Beatrice S. Mandel of Los Angeles chair-elect. Mandel will assume the office of chair of the Board on July 1, when the term of current chair, Julian Sandler, concludes. Mandel will become the first person from the West Coast to lead the Board.
During her 20 years as a Hillel lay leader, Mandel has been vice chair of the Hillel: FJCL Board of Directors, chair of the Human Resources Committees and has served on the Hillel Finance and Strategic Planning Implementation committees. As chair of the Accreditation Committee she oversaw the process of updating the organization’s standards. In 2008, she served as co-chair of Hillel’s successful Summit on the University and the Jewish Community. In addition, Mandel has been chair of the Los Angeles Hillel Council.
A graduate of UCLA, Mandel was the first woman president of the UCLA Alumni Association. She has held numerous distinguished positions in the California higher education system, including regent of the University of California, immediate past chair of the UCLA Foundation’s Finance Committee and president of Women and Philanthropy at UCLA. Mandel currently sits on the Board of Directors of the UCLA Foundation and on the Board of UCLA’s Israel Studies Program. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the California Council on Economic Education. In addition to her work with Hillel and UCLA, Mandel has served on the Board of the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles. She is married to Leonard Mandel and is the mother of two adult daughters.
