Revealing of the Edgar M. Bronfman Hillel Israel Center. On November 16, 2008, a dedication ceremony was held in honor of Edgar M. Bronfman, chairman of Hillel's International Board of Governors, for his unremitting dedication and passion to Hillel Israel.
Atop Mt. Scopus at the Hebrew University campus, the event kicked off with an opening reception and invitation-only ceremony.
Present to honor Mr. Bronfman's contributions at the ceremony were his sons, Adam and Matthew; Israeli President, Shimon Peres; Chairman of the Hillel Board of Directors, Julian Sandler; Hillel International President, Wayne L. Firestone and local Hillel staff and community leaders.
"The Edgar M. Bronfman Hillel Israel Center will serve as a model to other Hillels in Israel and around the world in their work to inspire Jewish young people," said Firestone. "We thank the Bronfman Family for their steadfast support and commitment to enhancing Jewish life within the global Jewish community."
President Shimon Peres at the dedication ceremony of The Edgar M. Bronfman Hillel Israel Center. The Edgar M. Bronfman Hillel Israel Center is the headquarters of the Hillel Israel Regional Office, responsible for overseeing the country's nine Hillels. These Hillels form one part of the Hillel global network Bronfman has helped to create.
"When I became the founding chairman of Hillel's International Board of Governors, I never expected that Hillel would spread to this many campuses or countries," admitted Bronfman during his address to the ceremony. Hillel now has nine centers in Israel, five in Latin America, 27 in the former Soviet Union, and over 500 in the United States.
Bronfman's remarks belie his remarkable commitment to Hillel's international presence. In the addition to generous financial support, Mr. Bronfman has made substantial investments of his personal time. During his tenure as Hillel's Chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr. Bronfman has visited more than 100 campuses and communities around the world, speaking with students and advocating on behalf of Hillel with university faculty and Jewish community leaders.
The dedication of the Edgar M. Bronfman Hillel Israel Center is a fitting tribute to the worldwide reach of the Samuel Bronfman Foundation and to the strength of Hillel Israel.
"The event was a great success, and bodes well for the future growth and success of Hillel Israel," said Hillel Israel's Director General Yossie Goldman at the end of the evening. "We look forward to welcoming new friends to the Hillel Israel family as we continue to offer meaningful Jewish programs to Israeli and overseas students across the country."
