Sapir Hillel Students Help Alleviate the Trauma of War
January 6, 2009Comments (0) | Add | E-mail this to a friend A message from Rabbi Yossie Goldman, Director General, Hillel Israel
Children in the bomb shelters in Sderot watch movies to distract them from the dangers outside. Hillel students at Sapir College travel to the bomb shelters in Sderot and surrounding communities, carrying portable projectors, donated by Sapir College, and movies, donated by the Sderot Cinemateque. The Hillel center at Sapir College in Sderot has its finger on the pulse in southern Israel during these difficult times. Director Eyal Mazliah and his Hillel staff are in a unique position to help alleviate the trauma of the people who have to spend so much time in bomb shelters, listening for the "boom" of incoming rockets.
Thinking outside the box, Sapir Hillel had a wonderful idea, which they call Roving Movies: students travel to the bomb shelters in Sderot and surrounding communities, carrying portable projectors (donated by Sapir College) and movies (donated by the Sderot Cinemateque), and hold screenings for the children who are forced to stay in the shelters hour after hour, day after day. As kids watch a film, they are distracted for a couple of hours from the dangers outside, and that's the whole point.
News of the project has already spread out in ripples; Eyal has received dozens of requests for the roving movies. Two teams of students are now implementing the project, reaching five communities a day. In addition to the Roving Movies, Sapir Hillel has been donating supplies to area shelters, and is conducting a special collection for that purpose.
If you would like to make a donation, you may send a check made out to Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, either to the Hillel Israel office at Hebrew University, Mount Scopus, Israel 91905, or to Hillel International (earmarked for Sapir Hillel in Sderot, Israel): 800 Eighth Street, N.W. Washington, DC 20001. Shekel checks should be made out to Mossad Hillel.
Thank you in advance for your support and generosity.
Below is a short video clip of the children enjoying a movie.
