 Fighting the College Cash Crunch
Parents, students and college counselors agree: Jewish families are finding it harder than ever to pay for higher education during this major downturn in the economy.
“Parents are coming in confidentially and asking how they keep their daughter in school. Families are in an economic strait jacket,” says Claire Friedlander, a college consultant and licensed professional counselor in Connecticut. “I didn't get the feeling that financial aid was an issue until this year.”
But Bruce Scher, director of college counseling at Chicagoland Jewish High School in Illinois, offers this advice: “There is a tremendous amount of opportunity out there [that] students just don’t know about. The biggest fallacy is that parents feel the full amount of tuition is their burden. ”

 Judea Pearl: Father of Slain Reporter Honors Son's Memory
The infamous photo of a captured Daniel Pearl, handcuffed with a gun to his head, tells the story of his violent and widely publicized death. Danny’s family, however, chooses to tell the story of his well-lived and widely celebrated life.
“We were thinking after his funeral, ‘How will we cope with his upcoming birthday?’” Judea recalls. “His sister suggested we [celebrate] in a way that he would like – with a jam session. So we contacted his musician friends, people came together, and it was the seed for Music Day.”
Schmoozing with...Seth Rogen
Funnyman Seth Rogen is the newest Jewish star to take Hollywood by storm. Last year’s double feature of Knocked Up—his starring vehicle—and Superbad—his first screenplay—made him the biggest name in comedy. In August he starred in Pineapple Express, another film he co-wrote with fellow bar mitzvah Evan Goldberg. This fall he stars in Kevin Smith’s newest film, while also shooting a 2009 release with director Judd Apatow. Despite his hectic schedule, Rogen takes an on-set breather with Fred Topel of JVibe, the magazine for Jewish teens, to explain how his Jewish upbringing influences his comedy.

Hillel Student Creates Web Site to Ease the College Search Process
When Jordan Goldman was school shopping he wasn’t satisfied with the information available. Sometimes the only thing he had to base his $250,000 decision on was a phonebook-sized college guidebook. So he decided to create his own resource - and company - with no business experience and $20,000 in savings.
"My mom said 'you're totally nuts this is your savings. Get a job,' " said Goldman, whose response was "when the money is gone I’ll get a job."
