A tattooed Jew.Jews & Tattoos: What's a Rabbi to Do?

Although no statistics are available for Jewish college students, the American Academy of Dermatology states that tattoos are more common today than ever before.

So when Jewish students consider a tattoo, they often turn to their Hillel rabbi for advice. Usually, it's not what they expected.

EDITORS COLUMN.

I confess, on occasion I browse the racks of questionably age-appropriate clothing stores. I like to believe it keeps me current, if not fashionable.

But during a recent visit to the local mall, I was so overwhelmed by the unusual body art on the retail assistant, I didn't even notice the skinny jeans she was suggesting I try on.

"That had to hurt," I said as I pointed to her exposed midriff. Not too bad, was her nonchalant response.

Later back home, as I surveyed merchandise I knew I would soon be returning, I started to wonder if tattoos on Jewish college students was an issue of concern for Hillel professionals.

As I spoke to several students and their campus rabbis, I was surprised by what they told me.

Regardless of their commitment to tradition, the rabbis maintained deep respect for the students' perspective.  The rabbis understood that the students were looking for knowledge and not judgment. In turn, the students became informed Jewish young adults and made their decisions accordingly.
