Time to Not Fill Such Big Carbon Shoes
As if unflattering paparrazzi photographs weren't enough of a bane for celebrities, now their being held accountable for wanton carbon consumption. A British newspaper recently published the massive carbon footprint left by an extravagant celebrity wedding.  According to The Independent, it would take the "average British couple more than 10 years to contribute as much to heating up the planet" as was done by this week-long nuptial.

At Hillel's recent 2007 Spitzer Forum, students walked a much different walk.  Spitzer was the first Jewish conference to be carbon neutral: Every carbon dioxide unit emitted by the conference was offset through a partnership with Carbonfund.org, making the Spitzer Forum a zero-net greenhouse gas emitter. A waste-free policy was in affect during the hotel stay. No newspapers were delivered to the participant's rooms, the sheets weren't washed and the program materials were printed with a 100 percent carbon-neutral process.

Hillel is providing students with opportunities to see how tzedek, or social justice, can shape a more sustainable world and to make their carbon footprint just a little bit smaller.
