Bequests

A gift to Hillel in your will is one of the easiest and most important ways to ensure that your support for Jewish campus life continues beyond your lifetime. By having a will, you can fully provide for your family and loved ones, while ensuring that your assets are distributed as you wish. A bequest to Hillel in your will is easy to set up and, of course, can be changed as your circumstances evolve.

Whether made through a will or a revocable trust, a charitable bequest to Hillel has several benefits:

You may direct your bequest to support Hillel's general purposes, or specify a particular area of interest.
Once you notify us of your bequest intention, you qualify for membership in Hillel's Heritage Society.
A gift to Hillel is completely free of any estate taxes.
By removing assets from your estate through a charitable bequest, you may reduce or eliminate any estate tax burdens to your heirs.

Please let us know if you are planning to or already have included Hillel in your will. Even if you wish to remain anonymous, we ask that you contact us if you have specific wishes regarding the use of your charitable bequest.

As you discuss your estate plans with your family, lawyer, or other advisors, it may be helpful to share with them the following sample bequest language:

Specific Bequests allow you to designate a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your total estate, or specified property or other assets as a gift to Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life.

I bequeath the sum of $ _____ [or a specified property or other asset; or a specified percentage of my estate] to Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, located in Washington, DC, to be used for its general purposes [or for a particular program or purpose].

Residual Bequests allow you to designate the remaining residue of your estate as a gift to Hillel, after the payment of all expenses and specific bequests to other beneficiaries have been made.

I bequeath to Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, located in Washington, DC, the rest and residue of my estate to be used for its general purposes [or for a particular program or purpose].

Contingent Bequests allow you to make a testamentary gift to Hillel only under certain circumstances. This is an excellent way to ensure that your assets pass to the causes important to you in the event of unforeseen circumstances, such as the prior death of one or more named beneficiaries. For example, you can name Hillel as a beneficiary only if no other close family members survive you. Childless couples sometimes provide for the entire estate to go to the surviving spouse, or if the spouse does not survive them, to Hillel.
