Student Initiative Grants help provide funding for innovative campus-based Jewish programming. Grants are awarded by the Student Initiatives Committee, which is composed of Jewish student leaders and volunteers from around North America.
CriteriaIn addition to the
general grant criteria, the Student Initiatives Committee requires that projects meet the following criteria:
- Proposals, initiatives and evaluations must be initiated, developed, implemented and written by students
- Initiatives must be creative, innovative and new or significantly different from previous programming done on the applicant's campus
- Initiative must demonstrate strong interactive components, engaging participants in experiential ways.
- For shabbatonim or retreats, initiatives must exhibit strong pluralistic components, dialogue or exploration.
Funding is not offered for:
- A replication of a regularly scheduled program on your campus
- Pre-packaged programs (Fees paid to people or organizations outside of Hillel who run the entire program)
- Fundraisers
FundingThe Committee is unable to fund all of the proposals it receives. Grants are awarded for amounts up to $2,000 (the vast majority of grants are awarded in amounts of $1,000 or less).
Encouragement Grants up to $1,000Encouragement Grants are designed to support programs that are student initiated and implemented.
Irving and Sarah Pitt Campus Creativity Grants up to $2,000Applications for Irving and Sarah Pitt Grants should exceed the guidelines for Encouragement Grants. Pitt Grants are allocated in sums up to $2,000. The Committee awards these grants to innovative projects which distinguish themselves among all other.
Allocation ProcessUpon approval of the proposal, half of the allocated funds will be awarded immediately. The remaining funds will be awarded following:
Any unspent funds allocated by the committee must be returned.
If the Revised Budget form indicates that all awarded funds were not spent, only the amount spent will be allocated.
Checks will be issued to Hillels or appropriate organizations only and will not be issued to individuals.EvaluationYou must submit the program to
Hillel's Program Exchange within one month of the completion of the program.
PublicityAll materials and publicity must state that funding for the project has been made possible by: The Student Initiatives Committee of Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life.
DeadlinesThere will be six rounds of grant applications. Events must take place after the decision notification date for the round in which you applied. No programs will be funded retroactively. Decisions for each round will be announced by e-mail by the decision notification date. Only projects planned for the 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 school years will be considered. Proposals must be submitted on time.
