You can create the most fabulous Web site in the world, but without a place to store the completed pages, no one will know about it. An organization or company that stores and presents the pages for you is called a hosting provider, or just a host, for short. There are free and low cost services, professional grade services, and just about everything in between.
Pricing depends largely on:
1. How much space you need to store your pages
2. How much advanced functionality you plan to use
Hosts don't have to be local, as the entire transaction often occurs online anyway. So, don't let geography restrict you too much in choosing a host.
There are a number of potential sources for hosts:
College or UniversityVirtually all universities will provide some level of free space to students, staff, and/or student organizations. It may be worth starting here. The amount of space provided might not be enough, if you plan on storing a lot of photos or images, but it is worth a shot. Some colleges and universities are more helpful than others.
Other HillelsAsk around and find out where other nearby Hillels are hosting their sites. If you are part of a regional Hillel, ask where they are hosting their site.
Lay LeadersTry a lay leader - you may be surprised. They may either do Web stuff for a living or they do it as a hobby or they may know someone who can help out. It never hurts to ask.
Hosting ProvidersIf all else fails, there are zillions of Web hosting companies out there. We have compiled several different lists for you. Please realize that there are many, many more hosts than listed here.
[Note: Hillel does not have relationships with any of these hosts and can not be held responsible for their level of service or pricing. You must do your own research and select the host that best suits your particular needs.]
