About Amherst College
Ongoing activities include student-led Shabbat services, student-cooked Shabbat dinner in Cadigan Center`s kosher kitchen, learning, community service, and participation in Five College Hillel (with Smith College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and UMASS Amherst). High Holiday services led by Rabbi and students. Seders are held both first and second nights. One of the best aspects of Jewish life at Amherst is being located in the Five College area with a rapidly expanding Jewish community. Amherst is 1 mile from a Reconstructionist Congregation (Jewish Community of Amherst) and in walking distance of Chabad and UMASS Hillel (which has a variety of services each week). Kosher food is available in the local markets. The Yiddish Book Center is located at nearby Hampshire College. In addition to Amherst Hillel, students advocate for and celebrate Israel as part of Amherst Friends of Israel. Amherst students participate in Five College Hillel programming, birthright Israel trips and Jewish interests groups. Students can take classes (including many more Jewish studies classes) at any of the Five Colleges, which can be reached by free busses.
This past year, Hillel welcomes two new Jewish student organizations at Amherst College: JewCrew which is providing social and intellectual programming and Mizvah & Miracles (affiliated with Chabad of the Five Colleges).
