Hillel has been present on the Cal Poly SLO campus as a student-run club for over 25 years. Currently we are considered a SOREF group. The last 3 years have seen exponential growth in enthusiasm, ruach, spirituality, political awareness and participation. A strong and active student board meets weekly. Several major fundraising efforts have resulted in increased programming which includes monthly Shabbat dinners, Passover seders and holiday celebrations, all at no cost to students. Theme Shabbats often include speakers, cultural education or enrichment activities. This past year an optional Shabbat service was offered prior to the Shabbat dinners. A large majority of students come early and participate in services. Hillel presence on campus is recognized by students, faculty, interfaith organizations and community. Community groups such as Hadassah, synagogues and the JCC look to Hillel for support and input. For the first time ever, students seeking Jewish life on campus are deliberately choosing Cal Poly SLO. The University Christian Center and local synagogues have cooperated in allowing Hillel to use their facilities for events. However, there remains no official Hillel office or programming space. Weekly e-mail announcements are sent to students.
