About Colby College
Colby`s Jewish community is constantly growing and becoming more active. Hillel holds a weekly Shabbat dinners and services, and celebrates holidays with the local synagogue in Waterville. We also have a seder on campus with Kosher for Passover food from Boston. Jewish students participate in other social activities such as challah baking, movie nights, matzah ball soup dinners, and ice cream study breaks. Colby`s Hillel organizes activities with Bowdoin, Bates, and UMaine Hillels, and works closely with the Beth Israel Congregation of Waterville in order to strengthen community ties. Rabbi Rachel Isaacs, Colby's Hillel Director and the spiritual leader at Beth Israel Congregation, regularly advises students, and some Colby students participate directly in the synagogue's services. The Rabbi also teaches classes for the Hillel on topics such as social justice, Israel, and ethics. Colby's Hillel also works with Jewish Studies and other college departments to bring to campus performances and speakers related to Judaism and Jewish life.Â
