About College of Charleston

The College of Charleston is a public liberal arts and science university located in Charleston, South Carolina. Founded in 1770, the College ranks high for quality education, student life, and affordability. With a student body of approximately 10,000 undergraduates, the College’s historic downtown location provides the best of both worlds – an intimate undergraduate experience in a beautiful and exciting urban setting that is just minutes from the beach! 

The Sylvia Vlosky Yaschik Jewish Studies Center is the center of Jewish activity at the College of Charleston. The Center is the home to both the Jewish Studies department and the Jewish Student Union/Hillel. The facilities includle a lounge, a library. an all-purpose meeting room used for both classes and meals, and the administrative offices for the Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program. Most of the programming for the JSU/Hillel occurs in this building, which is located in the heart of campus. Our pluralistic environment welcomes students from all backgrounds and affiliations.

Birthright Participation Taglit-Birthright Israel offers a free trip to Israel for students who have never been to Israel on a peer-based trip.

Alt Break Participation Alternative Breaks are organized, short-term service projects, often involving travel. Student participants are challenged to understand difficult social issues and to explore questions of Judaism and social responsibility while giving of themselves and their time.

With more than 800 Jewish students on campus, the Jewish Student Union/Hillel serves as the center for Jewish life at the College of Charleston. We are a student-run organization that provides a place for Jewish students to connect with each other in a fun, laidback and supportive environment. Every week, we host Shabbat services and dinner - and that's only the beginning. In addition to other weekly programming, such as Wednesday night Meet-to-Eats, we offer community service opportunities, holiday celebrations, cultural events and social activities. The JSU/Hillel is truly a home away from home for Jewish students at the College.

Jewish life at the College of Charleston is unique: our Hillel is located in the Jewish Studies Center on campus, where students take academic courses. Having the Jewish Studies professors nearby gives our students many resources for learning and growing as young adults during their time at the College of Charleston. This arrangement also benefits us because students are constantly coming in and out of the building. We are one of the most prominent groups on campus.
