About City College
The CCNY Hillel's main goal is to unite the growing number of Jewish students, faculty, and staff on campus. We are inclusive and have members from all backgrounds who share a common interest in Jewish history, culture, and support of Israel. Most of our events deal with culture, entertainment and history. Through the Hillel Organization, we help students with scholarships, internships and free trips to Israel. We work closely with the Hillels of other CUNY campuses and nearby Columbia-Bernard. Historically, CCNY has an important place in Jewish history---just ask the older generations. Founded in 1943, the CCNY Hillel was one of the largest in the country, but by 1997, the numbers greatly declined and the club ceased operations. In 2002, as the Jewish student population began rising again, the club was restarted. In the spring of 2006, CCNY Hillel was granted a strategic fund from Hillel to finance more programs and events. In the summer of 2006, CCNY Hillel marched in the annual Salute to Israel Parade on 5th Avenue in New York. Much of CCNY Hillel's Jewish history may be found in the Cohen Library, which has a large collection of books dealing with Jewish topics. The same way that a minyan depends on the presence of ten men, our strength is also dependent on our members. For example, if you are a musician, your band can perform with us on campus. By attending our meetings and organizing events, you can help rebuild a Jewish community on our campus. Shalom - and welcome to The City College of New York!
