"hillel_desc": "UGA Hillels programming generally falls into four categories: Community, Israel, Jewish Living and Learning, and Tzedek (Social Justice). Our community events feature barbecues, social programs in the dorms, bowling and trivia nights, outdoor events such as whitewater rafting, and our biggest campus-wide event of the year, UGA Idol. Idol is an American Idol-style singing competition co-sponsored with the Sigma Delta Tau sorority (SDT). 800 people from all walks of campus fill Hodgson Hall at UGAs performing arts center to cheer for their favorite singer. The winner receives a $500 prize and the chance to compete in Hillels of Georgias Campus Superstar program for a $5,000 prize. Our Israel programming has two main centers. The first is Taglit-birthright Israel (more than 20 students went to Israel for their first time with Hillel; other students went with other providers) and follow-through birthright programming. The second is our Dawgs for Israel student group, which advocates for a strong Israel while maintaining a respectful dialogue on Israels relationship with the Palestinians. Jewish living and Jewish learning are at the core of UGA Hillels mission. We come together to celebrate Shabbat and festivals; we welcome visiting rabbis from Greater Atlanta and around the world with our Rabbi Roundtable series; and we learn Jewish texts on a weekly basis. Thirty students filled our home last March for a hamantaschen bakeoff and alternative megillah reading in English featuring belly dancing. A new tradition may have begun this spring on the second night of Pesach when we held a Freedom Seder featuring the most spirited Hillel anyone could remember by UGAs African American Choral Ensemble (ACE). ACE sang Btzeit Yisrael in Hebrew, Go Down Moses, and two other gospel songs. Some fifty students jammed our building, the Director of African-American Studies and the Office of Institutional Diversity were represented at the seder. We try to actualize the Torahs commandment to Pursue Justice through our Tzedek (social justice) program. Tzedeks main event of the year was and will be Ugas Party, a holiday party named after Uga the bulldog, mascot of UGA, for indigent children of Athens-Clarke County and their parents and guardians. Tzedek mobilized some 75 student volunteers from across campus for the toy drive and holiday party, which featured a performance by Noteworthy, a womens a cappella group. Next year we hope to have Uga himself in attendance. Ten students will travel to Mexico for an Alternative Break at the end of the school year to help promote sustainable agriculture. UGA Hillel is well positioned for a strong 2008-2009 academic year. We are finishing up our first year under the direction of Rabbi Justin Kerber. This year we will welcome Michael Braun as our new Jewish Student Life Coordinator and Alicia Arnold-Compere as our Office Administrator. Michael graduated from Indiana University in 2002 with a B.S. in Business Economics Public Policy and International Studies. He was active in Hillel, the Theta Chi fraternity, and the Hoosier cheerleading squad. Most recently, he was an English language teacher in Gumi-City, South Korea. He loves to get outside: climbing, hiking, running, cycling, and swimming. When he was an undergrad, Hillel gave him a familiar landmark and framework for student life while allowing him to immediately participate and contribute in a campus organization. He hopes to pass along his positive experience at IU Hillel to Jewish students at UGA. Alicia Arnold-Compere is working on her B.A. from Gainesville State College while she serves as our Administrator. Most recently, she worked at the Center for Safe Youth, LLC, a non-profit organization that provided transportation services for children and teens at risk. She is looking forward to bringing her considerable organizational skills to bear on our operation while learning more about Judaism and Jewish culture and to meeting and getting to know the students who make up our Hillel family. We are delighted with both of them and are very excited about the New Year. Jewish life on campus, like campus life in general, is dominated by a vibrant Greek scene. The Jewish Greek community features two fraternities, Alpha Epsilon Pi and Tau Epsilon Phi, and a sorority, Sigma Delta Tau. Until recently, there was a second Jewish sorority, Delta Phi Epsilon, and there is some interest among the alumnae in restarting it. Many Jewish students are also involved in other frater",
