To understand Mason Hillel, it is essential to understand Mason as a whole. George Mason University has evolved rapidly from a small, commuter campus 30 years ago to the largest university in Virginia today. Mason is a school on the rise, excelling in quality and value as a modern, public university. With more than 20,000 undergraduates (more than a quarter of whom live on campus), Mason prides itself on a dynamic culture, innovative academic programs, and cutting-edge research faculty and facilities. Mason is ranked in the top five “Up-and-Coming Institutions” in an annual survey conducted by U.S. News & World Report, as a top-100 “best value in public colleges” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, and in the top 70 on the Forbes magazine list of “America’s Best College Buys.” The university features Nobel laureate faculty, Division I sports teams, a technologically advanced campus, and an outstanding extracurricular life, with more than 200 clubs and organizations.
Over the past five years there has been a significant influx of Jewish students enrolled at Mason. Increasing Jewish student enrollment has occurred because:
- George Mason University’s reputation has significantly improved;
- Tuition is affordable when compared with other options;
- Admission to Mason has become increasingly competitive for Virginia students who are also accepted to other top notch universities;
- Mason offers highly sought after government and government related internship opportunities;
- High caliber faculty and desirable programs has improved the value of education
- Mason’s athletics program has a growing reputation.
With more Jewish students attending Mason than ever before there is an increased demand for a strong Jewish campus life. Mason Hillel provides Jewish university students an opportunity to build a Jewish community by planning and running events that meet their needs and interests. All events aim to add importance to the individual student’s Jewish experience. We create Jewish spaces on campus where students become connected to the community through networking with other Jewish students.
