Rabbis for Human Rights - North America |
Mission Statement:
Founded in 2002, Rabbis for Human Rights - North America (RHR-NA) is the only national multi-denominational rabbinic organization that gives voice to the Jewish tradition of human rights. Our goal is to educate and inspire rabbis to assume moral leadership on human rights issues in there own communities, in the American Jewish community at large, and in coalition with clergy of other faiths. The belief that all human beings are created in the image of God (Betzelem Elohim) and deserving of dignity (K'vod Habriot) and justice (Tzedek), is central Judaism. We will do all we can to help all Jews to fulfill this core teaching of our faith. It is our hope that our work, along with the important work of other related organizations in our community, will re-establish the Jewish community as a major advocate for human rights for all lin Israel and North America.
In January 2005, dismayed by the revelations of abuse at Abu Ghraib and by the silence in the Jewish community on the issue of torture, RHR-NA launched Honor the Image of God: A Jewish Campaign to End U.S.-sponsored Toruture. The goal of the campaign is to create Jewish resources on Jewish values and torture and to inspire rabbis and Jews to join in coalition with other faiths and human rights groups in the national struggle to end the use and legitimization of torture by the United States.
