Participants will join students from their school (and possibly from other schools) for a week in which they will implement social justice projects and explore the magical city of Montevideo and its Jewish community.
Alternative Spring Break Uruguay is a good opportunity to engage in social justice projects for the local community, such as implementing educational activities and working with young children from impoverished neighborhoods. The experience will be entirely hands on as volunteers will go into different communities to make a difference.
The volunteers will deepen their understanding of and involvement in social problems and poverty related issues, with the goal that they will become more socially conscious and impassioned leaders concerned with social justice issues upon return to their country.
It is also an excellent opportunity to learn about and discuss the meaning of social justice from a Jewish perspective, and experience the vibrant Jewish community of Montevideo and the Uruguayan Jewish youth at Hillel Uruguay. Hillel Uruguay is excited to act as the host for North American Hillels so they can share their culture, learn from each other, and create stronger global Jewish peoplehood connections.
Participating Hillels are expected to send one to two Hillel professionals, depending on the size of the group. These Hillel professionals are also responsable for leading discussions and reflection (curriculum provided by SIC).
