Hillel Leaders Congratulate Richard Joel, Pledge Continued Achievement for Hillel

The officers of Hillel congratulate our friend and partner Richard Joel on being elected president of Yeshiva University. We wish Richard, his wife Esther and their entire family the greatest happiness, success, and fulfillment as they undertake this new period of their lives.

Since he was appointed international director in 1988, Richard's contributions to Hillel and to the Jewish community have been immeasurable. Under Richard's leadership, Hillel became an independent organization and established its first international headquarters, to name just two remarkable accomplishments. Not only has he touched the lives of countless Jewish students, he has transformed this movement and put Jewish renaissance at the forefront of the community's agenda.

During Richard's tenure, Hillel has identified and trained student leaders around the world who share a commitment to Jewish renaissance. In addition to hiring talented professionals, Hillel has put into place an international network of lay leaders who support the movement at the local, regional and international level. Hillel has forged relationships with Federations, the Joint Distribution Committee, the Jewish Agency for Israel, the World Union of Jewish Students, the World Jewish Congress, and other international organizations that have enabled the movement to grow in North America and to expand to Latin America and the former Soviet Union.

Students, lay leaders, professionals, and international organizations remain unshakably committed to this partnership and to the work of Hillel. We are confident that Hillel will continue to achieve excellence and grow as it provides Jewish college students with opportunities to explore and celebrate their Jewishness.

The international leadership of Hillel has begun the process of finding a successor. A search committee is being formed and a search process is being planned.

Just as Richard is beginning a new chapter of his life, Hillel is beginning a new chapter of its history. It is our belief that Richard and Hillel will continue to serve the Jewish people brilliantly in the holy work that is before us.
