Business and philanthropic leaders from around the world gathered at the Pierre Hotel in New York on April 6 to honor Edgar M. Bronfman, the chairman of the International Board of Governors of Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life. The highlight of the dinner was a live interview with Bronfman by journalist Charlie Rose.
"Through his work in education and public affairs, Edgar is not just securing the future of the Jewish community, he is ensuring that it is a future filled with meaningful Jewish content," said Hillel President Avraham Infeld. "What is most remarkable about Edgar is that he has given generously of his time throughout his chairmanship, visiting with students on more than 100 campuses around the world."
As founding chairman of Hillel's International Board of Governors since 1994, Bronfman has helped to bring about one of the most significant turnarounds in the history of Jewish organizations.
"My father's leadership and inspiration have fueled a Jewish renaissance on university campuses the world over," said Edgar's son, Adam Bronfman, the dinner chairman. "In addition of our vast network in North America, Hillel student centers can now be found in Latin America, in the former Soviet Union, and in Israel. He has traveled to more than 100 campuses to meet with lay leaders, with professional staff and to engage with the students. As a result of all this work, more than 30 new Hillel student centers have been built, more than 50 men and women have joined the International Board of Governors, and most importantly, countless numbers of young men and women have found a more dynamic and diverse place to express and explore their Jewish identity."
Among the guests at the dinner were Leonard and Madlyn Abramson, Charles and Andi Bronfman, Eduardo S. Elsztain, Edith B. Everett, Michael and Tovit Granoff, Harold Grinspoon and Diane Troderman, Lynne B Harrison, Leonard and Tobee Kaplan, Randall Kaplan and Kathy Manning, Lynn Schusterman, Judy and Michael Steinhardt, Abigail and Leslie Wexner and Gary and Karen Winnick.
