Richard Schaefer, assistant professor of history at SUNY Plattsburgh, talked on the subject of "Memory and Morality" at The Days of Remembrance, SUNY Plattsburgh's annual Holocaust commemoration, on April 28th. SUNY Plattsburgh Hillel president Victoria Haberman also shared her personal reflections on the Shoah during the event. The commemoration was also the venue for the inaugural award ceremony of the Douglas R. Skopp Creative Competition on the Theme of the Holocaust. The competition and the prize are named in honor of retired history professor Douglas Skopp, also the college's official historian. Prof. Skopp was the academic adviser to SUNY Plattsburgh Hillel for a number of years and also began the annual Holocaust remembrances more than 20 years ago. Prof. Skopp recently released his novel, "Shadows Walking," a story about the intersecting lives of two physicians in the Third Reich, one working as an SS doctor and the other a Jew imprisoned in a Nazi death camp.
