Hillel's Guide to Racial Justice Learning and Action

As expressed in Hillel’s recent statement in support of racial justice, our country is in a state of substantial pain, turmoil, and fear, particularly for our Black friends and colleagues and other people of color. We know this moment feels like uncharted territory for many, but that some in our community know it all too well. As we move forward together in taking action, we must learn how best to be allies, to take responsibility for our own learning, to support our staff and students in meaningful and sensitive ways, and ultimately to be a positive force in repairing what’s broken and continuing to break in our world. 

To assist in how we take action as a Hillel community, in the coming weeks and months, Hillel International will provide guidance, training, and opportunities for discussion on topics of race, power, and privilege in our society. This page exists to be a living resource for our Hillel community. Here you’ll find opportunities to learn, discuss, and act. We will continue to update this page with the latest opportunities in this area. Please stay tuned for those updates.

 

Hillel International’s mission is to enrich the lives of Jewish students so that they may enrich the Jewish people and the world for all. Today’s world is broken in many ways and there is much work to do. Here are some of the ways we’ve recently made progress in efforts to pursue racial equity:

 

  • We are committing ourselves to do our part in building an anti-racist Jewish community and to doing so in partnership with Black Jews and Jews of color within and outside of our Hillel movement.
  • We are providing ongoing educational content, training, and learning for staff, students, and community members on issues of racial justice, implicit bias, power & privilege.
  • We are developing a multi-year plan for diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism, integrating these into the fabric of our organizational values, practices, and operations.
  • We are developing short and long-term measurable goals and strategies to combat racism and to diversify our Schusterman International Center staff, Board of Directors and Student Cabinet as well as to support diversity across the Hillel movement.
  • We are establishing a Hillel International Board of Directors Task Force to guide our efforts at addressing issues of diversity and racial equity.

UPCOMING EVENTS FROM HILLEL INTERNATIONAL AND OUR PARTNERS

For staff:

  • Saturday, January 5 & January 19 - 6:30-7:30 p.m. ET: 101 Session - Engaging Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Practice with Yavilah McCoy, founder of Ayecha and CEO of Dimensions Educational Consulting. Yavilah will be hosting two sessions available for students and professionals to engage in diversity, equity and inclusion trainings.
  • Sunday, January 13 & January 27 - 6:30-7:30 p.m. ET: 201 Session - Engaging Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Practice, which will expand upon the conversation in Yavilah McCoy's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion 101 session.
  • Hillel’s Employee Resource Group Program (open to staff who identify as Jews of Color, LGBTQ+, Non-Jewish and Black, having a disability, and/or Mizrahi/Sephardic)

OTHER RESOURCES FOR TAKING ACTION NOW:

In addition to timely events and opportunities being offered by Hillel International and our partners, there are countless other ways you can commit to taking action. Whether this is something you do as an individual, or something your Hillel takes on collectively, define and commit to explicit goals that you will set for yourself around anti-racism and allyship each year. Today, you might decide to choose an item from this page to read, listen to, watch, or act upon - the challenge will be to do that again tomorrow and the next day and the next day with intentionality. We encourage you to make commitments to yourselves and your communities about how you will engage with anti-racism efforts for the long term.

Put your intention into action.

  • Follow and elevate the voices of our Black colleagues, friends, and teachers on social media (for a start, Rabbi Sandra Lawson & April Baskin)

  • Get civically engaged through MitzVote by registering and committing to vote 

  • Support the lives and lived experiences of Jews of Color through DimensionsJews of Color Equity Challenge

  • Prioritize buying goods and services from Black-owned local business

  • Explicitly integrate regular (think: monthly, quarterly, whatever makes sense for your Hillel) anti-racist learning and action opportunities for staff and students into your annual strategy and goals. 

  • Have an open conversation about privilege within the Jewish community, and specifically the white Jewish community, and how best to use that privilege as power for change.

  • Donate to the Abayudaya COVID-19 Relief Fund to support our fellow Jews in Uganda
