 PurimThe story of Purim tells of a tyrant in Persia, Haman, who was bent on destroying the Jews – and how the Jewish community was rescued by the actions of Esther and Mordecai, and through the eventual intervention of King Ahashverosh. This is the story we recall in the Megillah we read on the holiday of Purim.
The grogger is a noisemaker, which is used to drown out the name of Haman during the reading of the Megillah.
Iran is a modern-day name for Persia and a new tyrant seems to be taking Haman’s place, threatening Israel, the United States and the whole world: Iran’s President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. We need to encourage today’s leaders to stand up to this menace.
Jewish students at Hillel’s Spitzer Forum on Social Justice learned about the growing threat from Iran, and spent a day lobbying Congressional leaders on Capitol Hill to continue supporting sanctions on Iran until their leaders abandon their pursuit of nuclear weapons.
