Competing for a Cause

There’s nothing like a little healthy competition.

That’s exactly what students from seven local Hillels in the United States are discovering this month with a new fundraising campaign, On One Foot.

Hillels provide innovative programming and engaging events year-round for students, all of which requires fundraising to make possible. Inspired by Hillel Ontario’s fundraising campaign On One Foot  (which raised over $100,000 in this, its second year), seven local Hillels are competing in their own version through the end of February, in which students create individual fundraising pages for their respective Hillels.

“What’s innovative about the On One Foot campaign is that it’s student driven,” said Hillel International’s Associate Director of Development, Research and Prospect Management Jenna Rabhan. “Hillel student leaders are leveraging their personal networks and making the ask to help support their Hillel and a specific cause that they have chosen to be meaningful to them.”

University of Miami (’17) Sammy Schneider is engaging many of her social networks to fundraise. She has successfully surpassed her first fundraising goal of $1,000 by e-mailing her family and friends, and is now aiming to raise $2,000 by Feb. 28 for Miami Hillel’s Student Innovation Fund.

“This fund goes toward student-run programming,” Schneider said. “It’s so important, because it not only gives students an opportunity to feel like a leader on campus, but it also caters to our needs.” She hopes that with this money Miami Hillel can host a student formal at the end of spring semester, planned and run by students.

Each Hillel has its own fundraising goal, beneficiary and page, with students’ individual pages listed on the campus page.

Participating Hillel campuses include: Central Florida Hillel, Hillel JUC of Pittsburgh, Hillel at UCLA, The Ohio State University Hillel, Queens College Hillel, University of Denver Hillel and University of Miami Hillel.
